Sikandra

Sikandra

This is the Akbar’s tomb located in the serene ambience of Sikandra 3 km away from Agra. The concept of this architectural masterpiece based on the secular leanings and a spirit of religious tolerance that Akbar had cultivated.

The third Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great has himself commenced its construction in around 1600 according to Tartary tradition to commence the construction of one’s one's tomb during one’s one's lifetime. Akbar himself planned his own tomb and selected a suitable site. However, he could not complete it and died. Thus his son Jehangir completed his tomb. Jehangir made several changes in the original plan to make this monument more splendorous.

The tomb has three storied red sandstone minarets famous for its inlay work of marble on the four corners of the building. The mausoleum is known for an open terrace decorated with carved latticework screens. The grave is in the basement decorated with paintings in colorful golden, green and blue hues on the stucco walls.
